Music

At the risk of sounding defensive, you’re not allowed to laugh. Fine… you can a little. I take that back — only chuckling is permitted.

I grew up with my grandmother, who had a piano. She taught me the basics, and I got to tinker a bit. I only had formal classes in Brunei when my mom enrolled me for a summer, and I learned Jim Brickman’s “All I Ever Wanted.” Once back home, I learned some easy pieces from my aunt’s collection.

I didn’t think I’d pick up string instruments, but hey, that’s what the pandemic does to you — it surprises you in all sorts of ways. It’s a meditative process to sit down, learn the chords to songs I enjoy, test them out, and record them so I can mark them as done. And I’m going to overanalyze myself now: it’s the perfect introverted pastime for someone who’s always busy in their head.
